How Poland’s $424 Million Venezuela Oil Deal Went Wrong After USDT Payments

On January 5, 2024, a person walked into the Hotel El Avila in Caracas Venezuela carrying a USB stick. On it sat about $60 million in Tether (USDT). The cash got here from Poland’s state-controlled refiner. The oil it paid for by no means arrived.

According to the Financial Times, Poland’s state refiner Orlen misplaced roughly $424 million, and three of its former managers are actually going through prison expenses.

A Deal Struck on a Yacht

It began in Abu Dhabi in November 2023, in the course of the Formula 1 weekend. The head of Orlen Trading Switzerland met a 25-year-old Hong Kong dealer on a yacht.

On November 29 they signed. Orlen’s Swiss unit would purchase 6 million barrels of Merey 16, Venezuela’s low cost heavy crude, for $345 million.

Within 5 days it wired $230 million. No collateral. No financial institution assure.

The Money Became a Token

US sanctions had locked Venezuela’s state oil agency PDVSA out of the greenback banking system. So the money was swapped into USDT, a digital token pegged to the greenback, and pushed by means of brokers in Dubai.

More than $132 million in USDT was then handed over inside Caracas resorts and eating places, one USB drive at a time. One conversion of $135 million produced solely $85 million. The lacking $50 million is caught in a UAE courtroom.

None of this was new. BeInCrypto reported in April 2024 that Venezuela had turned to Tether to maintain its oil cash shifting.

The Ships Waited, and Waited

Six chartered tankers sat off Venezuela for months. They left empty or went to different patrons. The transport invoice alone got here to about $72 million.

PDVSA says it by no means noticed a cent.

“…didn’t allocate any cargoes to Orlen or its intermediaries as a result of it had not been paid,” Reuters reported, citing PDVSA.

Warsaw prosecutors charged three former executives on August 7 with failing to guard 1.5 billion zloty, or $378 million, of firm belongings. They withstand 25 years.

Here is the uncomfortable half. Crypto is the element everyone seems to be repeating. The cash was already misplaced the second a state firm wired $230 million to strangers with nothing to carry.
