Cathie Wood Says the Dollar Could Surge — Here’s What Investors Should Watch
The ARK Invest CEO says the US greenback is way stronger than buyers assume and will recognize considerably over the subsequent few years.
Why is it necessary for buyers? A stronger greenback may stress gold, reshape bond positioning, and take a look at Bitcoin’s current skill to rise quickly.
Wood Says Investors Are Watching the Wrong Dollar Chart
Most merchants comply with the US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback in opposition to six main currencies. ARK argues that measure is outdated.
The Federal Reserve’s broader index covers 26 international locations and updates its weights yearly. On that measure, Wood says the greenback has gained 36% since August 2008 and now trades 44% above its long-term common.
“Contrary to the present narrative, the greenback has not been weak relative to the currencies of our commerce companions,” Wood wrote.
Her funding case is easy. Tax incentives are encouraging firms to reinvest in US factories and information facilities, whereas she expects Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to keep up tight financial self-discipline.
Wood compares the setup with the early Nineteen Eighties, when stronger US returns helped ship the greenback sharply increased.
In September, the DXY already posted its best month since June, gaining practically 2% as the Fed raised charges and signaled extra hikes.
The Trade Gets More Interesting With Gold and Bitcoin
Gold is the largest problem to Wood’s argument.
The greenback has misplaced 92% of its buying energy in opposition to gold since 2002. Wood thinks tighter coverage may reverse a few of that transfer.
Gold has already fallen from its January document of $5,602 to round $4,140. Morgan Stanley’s Amy Gower nonetheless sees $4,000 as strong support, helped by central-bank shopping for.
That makes $4,000 a key degree for buyers watching Wood’s thesis.
Bitcoin provides one other sign. BTC traditionally struggles when the greenback strengthens, but it gained 6.14% in September whereas DXY additionally rose.
If that divergence continues, Bitcoin could also be behaving in a different way from earlier greenback cycles. If it breaks down, Wood’s stronger-dollar name may grow to be a a lot greater downside for crypto buyers.
