DOJ Seeks to Seize $61M in Iran Oil Funds From Binance Accounts It Vouched For
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York filed a civil forfeiture grievance on September 14 in opposition to $61 million in cryptocurrency tied to Binance accounts and black market gross sales of Iranian oil.
Prosecutors allege the funds moved via buying and selling accounts held by Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, two China-based companies, earlier than reaching Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a US-designated terrorist group.
Same Iran-Linked Entities Binance Called Clean
“Today’s motion demonstrates our dedication to deprive the Government of Iran and its terrorist proxies of the unlawful cash they depend on to threaten the lives and security of the residents of the United States and elsewhere.”
Deputy US Attorney Sean Buckley made the statement saying the grievance on September 14.
The grievance names the identical two entities on the heart of a Senate probe earlier this 12 months.
Binance pushed back against claims in March, when Co-CEO Richard Teng known as the allegations “false and defamatory.”
Binance maintained that no funds immediately touched Iranian entities. However, Monday’s grievance tells a special story.
Prosecutors allege a community of wallets, known as Entity A, moved greater than $1.5 billion in illicit Iranian oil proceeds. The community funneled cash to IRGC-linked companies and an Iranian change.
A Familiar Pattern for Binance
This isn’t the primary time Binance-linked accounts have surfaced in Iran-related sanctions reporting.
Reuters reported that Shelbit, an Iran-linked exchange Dubai fined, despatched $676 million onto Binance.
Historically, Binance pleaded responsible to sanctions violations in 2023, paying a $4.3 billion penalty.
The Justice Department’s grievance doesn’t title Binance as a defendant. Therefore, the motion targets the cryptocurrency itself, together with Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale’s alleged function.
Awkward Timing for a UK Return
The submitting lands two weeks earlier than Binance’s planned UK license bid opens for purposes on September 30.
The change is searching for Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) authorization beneath Britain’s new crypto framework. That course of is constructed round governance and compliance requirements.
Meanwhile, a recent Iran-linked laundering grievance tied to its platform is unlikely to make that case simpler. Binance itself faces no prices in the submitting.
How the FCA weighs this grievance in opposition to Binance’s utility will turn into clearer as soon as the window opens.
